Last September, I drove to a protected wetland near my home in Oakland, Calif., walked to the end of a pier and started looking at birds. On that pier, for the first time, I had gone somewhere solely to watch birds. In some birding circles, people say that anyone who looks at birds is a birder — a kind, inclusive sentiment that also overlooks the forces that create and shape subcultures. I keep abreast of eBird’s rare bird alerts and have spent many days — some glorious, others frustrating — looking for said rare birds. I went out with experienced birders to learn how they move through a landscape and what cues they attend to.

CNN —American gamer and Twitch superstar Tyler “Ninja” Blevins revealed he was diagnosed with melanoma, a form of skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States; 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Blevins was diagnosed with melanoma, which is a rare type of skin cancer — only about 1% of skin cancer cases — but accounts for a large majority of skin cancer deaths. However, if people do have suspicious skin spots or any other symptoms concerning for skin cancer, they should talk to their primary care doctor or dermatologist. How to perform a skin self-examAn important part of screening for skin cancer is to document moles and other skin spots and to notice changes, the association says.

Tyler Blevins, the video game superstar known as Ninja, revealed this week that he had been diagnosed with melanoma, a form of skin cancer. Mr. Blevins, 32, said on social media on Tuesday that a mole was removed from his foot during an annual checkup with a dermatologist a few weeks ago. “It came back as melanoma, but they are optimistic that we caught it in the early stages,” he said. In the post, Mr. Blevins said a second dark spot was found on his foot that had also been removed and was being checked, “with the hopes that under the microscope they will see clear non-melanoma edges and we will know we got it.”

Loh’s way of doing that is by creating Zoom classes that feel more like social media than traditional learning. Called live.poshenloh.com, the platform employs exceptionally talented US high school students to teach mathematics via livestream. Loh came up with the idea during the pandemic, when livestream learning became commonplace, but not necessarily engaging for students. “Most people had the experience that a Zoom math class was very effective at putting children to sleep,” he told CNN. “I didn’t realize that mathematics and the performing arts could harmonize together in such a wonderful way.”

The cast of Critical Role launched the open beta for their new gaming system, "Daggerheart," on Tuesday. Last year, people packed into a sold-out Wembley Arena to watch the eight-person cast of Critical Role play "Dungeons & Dragons." But on Tuesday night, they took a break from the game that made them famous and launched "Daggerheart," their answer to "Dungeons & Dragons." The previous edition's Open Game License, or OGL, allowed creators to publish and profit from work compatible with the game. It's possible to rebuild your "Dungeons & Dragons" characters in "Daggerheart," and the complex capabilities built into the game allow for extended narrative-driven campaigns.

As of January, the site had about 10,500 subscribers, Sur told investors in an email viewed by BI. A better way to handle layoffs
  + stars: | 2024-02-20 | by ( Aki Ito | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +11 min
Out of everything that happens in the workplace, nothing underscores the harshly transactional nature of employment more than the way companies terminate their employees. To be sure, there are times when layoffs are necessary for the health — and even survival — of a company. In other words, the pitiless and coldhearted way businesses handle dismissals isn't just destructive to those who get dismissed. Is there a better way to handle layoffs? For starters, Herd says, managers should look the employees they're dismissing in the eye, rather than reading from a script.

So, as e-commerce reached a fever pitch during the pandemic, I vowed never to order from Amazon again. Buying online isn't always best for your walletThe first thing I noticed when quitting buying from Amazon was that I didn't actually need 90% of what I ordered. Abstaining from Amazon — and all the online megastores — meant I no longer made those impulse purchases, and, unsurprisingly, life went on. So, while I haven't bought anything on Amazon for almost four years, I've certainly used their services. I don't think that detracts from the positives of quitting buying from Amazon, but it does give some perspective.

I’m relieved that I didn’t love Botox, and that I will always feel ambivalent about it.

Famed sex and relationships therapist Esther Perel shared how to ask better questions. Esther Perel, a famed sex and relationships therapist and podcast host , told Business Insider that common first date questions like “What do you do?” and “Do you like your job?” are recipes for tedium. Ask questions that invite storiesPerel believes the best first date questions prompt the other person to tell a story — especially if it’s one they didn’t expect to tell. AdvertisementOne way to do that is to ask and answer questions that don’t make you out to be perfect. From the questions you ask to the activity you do, a date should be “a story that unfolds,” Perel said.
